Courier Shipments – WARNING
THE RISK OF USING A COURIER COMPANY & NOT A RECOMMENDED OPTION
What has been happening with Courier Shipments in SOUTH AFRICA:
- All courier shipments have to be processed by Customs in JHB
- Exhibitors send their shipments will a value below R250 (US$25)
- The goods get cleared under Section 38
- Customs Stop the shipment for Customs Exam
- The shipment gets failed & Customs request a price list from the Exhibitor
- By this stage the show / event is 1 - 2 days away !!
- The price list gets presented to Customs
- Customs request a new invoice & FULL duties to be brought to account !!
- As the Exhibitor is not registered as an Importer, Global Events Management and/or it's agent have to grant permission to use our details for clearance
- The Exhibitor is fined R1500 - R2000 (US$200) for under-declaring the value of their goods & they have
to pay FULL duties, based on their price list.
- By this time, the event has already started.
- Global Events Management and/or it's agent spend hours on the phone to Customs, and often, if we are not fast enough, then the Exhibitor looks at us, as being inefficient !!
- NOTE - Customs are stopping more & more courier shipments, for supplier under-declaring their goods. Remember - the Custom Controller's get a bonus for every shipment that is under-declared !!
- Please note - if Global Events Management and/or it's agent are to get involved in sorting out the Exhibitor's problem with Customs, our cost will be US$500, and it will be cash up front, and no
guarantees, that the shipment will make the conference !
